Brief Description:  Gascolator install

The gascolator installation is tricky. It needs to be positioned as low as possible on the firewall, but not so low that it would get ripped off if ahard landing were to rip off the landing gear itself. It also needs to fit in this airbox, and the location of the fuel line pass-through must not compromise the structural reinforcements on the firewall. I had to gauge the distance from the firewall, and then welded up a 4130 steel stand-off (image 1) for the fuel line bulk-head fitting (painted white in this photo).

Once that was in place, I adjusted the location and angle of the Andair gascolator so the attach bracket (3" x 3" aluminum angle) would sit flush with the top of the gascolator, and the firewall. Then located the two holes for the attach screws, and test-fitted again for the firewall hole locations.

It will be impotant to tighten the nut behind the bulkhead connector first, then check the fit of the gascolator against the bracket to ensure that tightening those AN4 attach bolts doesn't introduce any bending stresses on the system. I am not anticipating every messing with this system (other than periodic gascolator filter checks, which do not involve these fasteners).

On the far left side of the box, you can see where I've placed a silicone gasket to protect the future AN6 nut that will be protruding through this hole, and alsoto keep as much air as possible flowing out the bottom of the box for cooling purposes.
