Not sure how others felt at this stage in their builds but it is really rewarding to get to this particular juncture: hanging the engine. The deceptively short time it took to do the actual procedure belies the countless hours of prep work and planning it took to get here. The fact that it all went together so smoothly leaves me optimistic that I've have indeed calculated and considered everything correctly. In image 1, I'm lifting the 3L corvair (with Roy's Garage 5th bearing) off the crate in which it arrived. This engine is expected to provide 120 BHP at 3300 rpm.
I built this crate when I shipped the engine to Roy in 2011, and he used it to send it back to me after the mods. The plane is off to the side in image 1, because the hoist is relatively immobile and the plane must be slid under the engine. Image 2 shows the full length of the hoist. Not well shown here are the reinforcements I added to the roof joists to ensure they could handle the load. Image 3 has the engine just about to lower onto the mount, with the red bushings ready to accept the engine.
