Brief Description:  Windshield Install Part 6: Side and top retainers

With the front retainer done and painted, I turned my attention to the side and top retainers. My Rebel kit apparently did not come with the aluminum retainers one often sees on other builders' pages. Yet others have made their own, "Z" bend, versions of the retainers, which is what I resolved to do as well. That shape made more sense to me, with the rivets going through a flat surface that 'joggles' to accept the 1/8" windshield material.

Image one shows the profile of one of the retainers I fabricated in my trusty bending brake. It's not easy to bend the second flange, and if you look hard, you can see that one of the two is not aesthetically perfect due to the creative methods I had to use to bend it. Nevertheless, I produced two decent examples that will do the job.

But when it came to the 44" retainer that spans the cabin roof, I knew I had to seek help. One of our flying club members owns Canton Racing Products, which manufactures oil pans/tanks/reservoirs and accessories for car enthusiasts. His shop is a metal worker's paradise, and within ten minutes, Mike had used a hydraulic brake to make this perfect 4' retainer from 0.032" stock I ordered from Spruce.
