Brief Description:  channel clips / drill jig

The channels and bulkheads now need to be tied together with channel "clips"; made up of 0.020 stock (of which I have a lot of scrap pieces). Once in place, the floor becomes really rock-solid. This is a tedious process and can't be rushed. In particular, drilling into FUS5 (carrythrough) to accept the 6 or so clips for the floor channels always made me nervous, since the carrythrough is such a major load-bearing structure. However, this is what's prescribed and I didn't want any mistakes so I made a three-hole drill jig out of 0.080 stock based on the height of FUS5. As in image 1, placing the flat bottom of the jig on the floor next to the channel ensures perfect placement of the three holes on the bulkhead (or FUS5). Start the holes (#40), then finish without the jig in place to prevent from enlarging the holes in the jig. Use the same jig to drill the holes for the (still flat) clips and cleco them to the desired position on the bulkhead. Then go back and drill everything out to #30. Use a sharpie to trace the edge of the channel onto the clip, remove, and bend 90 degrees. Cleco back on, and easily drill the three holes for the channel. I got really precise and worry-free clip placement this way...much easier anyway than trying to hold the clip against the bulkheads while drilling. Image 3 shows a completed unit.
