Brief Description:  Baggage bulkhead Part 3

So now you start on one end and peel off one layer of the sheeting. The glass stays stuck to the other layer and retains it shape as you peel the first layer off. With the first layer partially removed, you lay the exposed glass on the part and apply pressure with the squeegee. Image 1 shows the part 2/3 of the way complete (second layer of sheeting is still on at this point). When it's all in position, and pressure applied with the squeegee, you remove the last layer of sheeting. This takes a bit more care, ensuring the glass stays stuck to the part as you pull on the last polyethylene layer.

Image 2 shows what the peel-ply layer looks like: notice how only a few spots have enough epoxy to bleed into the peel-ply? That just shows you how "epoxy-lean" this lay-up is.

Image 3 shows this side finished and trimmed. How much does it weigh? The original foam core alone was 13.6 oz. With one side glassed, it's now 28.3 oz.

Sharp eyes will also note a 'joggle' on the top part of the part...it is meant to follow the contours of the irregular bulkhead it will attach to and, fortuitously, adds even more lateral stiffness.
