Brief Description:  registration numbers Part 1

Having registered the aircraft last summer, it was time to think about afixing the numbers on the plane. I knew I needed 12" numbers because I plan to fly to Canada with this plane. Numbers that size are hard to ignore on a plane this size, so a paint mask was the only easy way to get good looking numbers that matched the lime green color scheme. So I ordered a set of left and right masks from aerographics.com.

As always, surface prep was carefully considered. While working on the paint prep for the wings, I noticed how much effort was required to remove excess epoxy chromate primer around the rivet heads. This was all the more remarkable given that the surfaces around the rivets hadn't been prepped in any way. My takeaway was that 2-part epoxy primer is a fantastic base coat for aluminum. So I purchased two cans of 2 part epoxy primer at a pricey $25 per can for my base coat.

I scotchbrite sanded the rivets as I did for the wings, then etched the area of the paint mask with a scotchbrite pad, and rinsed thoroughly. Once dry, I wiped with MEK, let it dry, and applied the mask 'dry'. This is fairly easy using the technique provided by aerographics.

With the mask on, I gave it three coats of the beige epoxy primer. when dry, it was really difficult to even scratch off, so I was really encouraged I was on the right track. I peeled away the shadows of the letters, and gave them 3 coats of the dark purple. Once dry, I masked the shadows (Image 1) and then pulled the letters (image 2)
