Brief Description:  Pitch Servo Install: part 4

The actual date here is Sept 2019, but I back-dated this fabrication sequence to 2018 for continuity of the project. While working on something else in the back of the aircraft, I was disheartened at the amount of flex the servo could experience in its current mounting to the floor. And although I groaned at the prospect of the effort involved, I realized two additional channels in the floor could stiffen things up considerably.

Image 1 shows the hole I cut in the floor. I know, I could have undone the rivets in the floor to get access to this, but removing rivets without damaging these thin sheets is a very tedious process especially in such tight spaces. It just felt easier to cut a hole. The floor is not structural anyway (since the floor is optional here). All the mating surfaces (and channels) are treated with epoxy chromate.

Image 2 shows the final installation of a two-part channel (made of 0.020" thick material) that runs parallel to the center channel in the center of the floor. It needed to be 2-parts in order to fit into the undersize hole I cut in the floor. This channel sits directly underneath the servo attach fitting, giving tremendous longitudinal stiffness. A second smaller channel (not shown) is then installed to bridge this channel with the lateral outboard floor channel.

Image 3 shows everything put back together. There's a lateral brace (seen on the lower left) that bridges externally to the outboard channel, That brace is rivetted to the internal lateral small channel mentioned above, and the entire combination of reinforcements results in an absolutely rock-solid servo mount, with very little additional weight. It took a whole weekend of work, but I'm now fully confident in the robustness of the installation. Safety wire on the bolts, and capstan cable termination finalize the installation.
