Brief Description:  flaperon controls (Part 2)

In this sequence of photos, I'm showing the final installation of the flaperon actuation controls:

You can see the flap cable fastened in two locations on the roof to try and eliminate as much slop as possible in the system. Even with this, there's about a 1/4" internal slop in the cable itself.

My flap handle was designed and fabicated by my brother-in-law and I'm thrilled with its operation (on the ground, at least). I acknowledge that it doesn't provide a ton of leverage like some other flap handle desings. But it's pretty retro looking, and far less obtrusive than other designs I've seen, and will hopefully help avoid a massive head injury in the event of a crash.

My flaperon settings are -12, -6, 0, +6, +12, and +18 degrees. The only place I don't get the desired 3" of flaperon up/down travel is in the -12 degree reflex position, where the left-wing control horn makes contact with the bulkhead. I'm not too concerned with that at the moment, because at cruise speeds I can't envision a need for such huge deflections. I'll adjust somehow if this turns out to be a false assumption.

As other builders have noted, there's a fair amount of slop in the entire flaperon system. It feels disconcerting, but most builders just acknowledge its existence and report no deleterious effects on handling. So the precise measurement of degrees of flaps in the flap indicator is widely known to be a guesstimate, since air loads in flight can significantly affect the degree of flaperons deployed.

This was one of the big jobs I needed to complete while at the larger workshop, so I'm pleased this is finally behind me. Lots of hours spent fussing over details and completing the final assembly tasks (drilling to final size, spacers, penny washers, lock nuts, castlellated nuts and cotter pin safetying).
