Brief Description:  Cowling Paint Part 3

From 6 feet away, I'd say this looks pretty good. I like the elipses despite the fact that they didn't quite match the shape I initially sketched out.

I added PTFE tape to the cowling doors to help preserve the paint job where the panels overlap (Image 2). I took some care in the application of the tape on the inside corners, as these areas flex when the cowling panel opens and shuts, and long stretches of tape will likely peel away here over time.

The latex paint seems to stick well to the aluminum, and the glossy UV protectant coating helps makes dirt and oil easy to wipe off, but I have resigned myself to touch-ups throughout the life of the aircraft. But this is not a unique situation: close inspection of all but the newest airplanes on any flightline will show chips and cracks on the cowling too. Let's face it, the cowling is subjected to a lot of stressors: hi temp and pressure differentials, 120 Kt winds that sometimes include rain. I think it's unrealistic to expect this area to not show wear over time. In my case, a paint brush and a $20 Quart of Benjamin Moore high quality exterior latex at annual is all I need to bring my paint scheme back to brand new (I hope).

Overall, there's enough color on the plane to make it interesting, and I'm really looking to complete all fuselage work by the end of October so it can move out and I can start work on the wingtips and light wiring.
