Brief Description:  carburetor installation

Got this Marvel MA3-SPA off eBay for just over $400, then sent it to Russ Romey at G&G (Michigan) for an overhaul and re-jetting for corvair operation ($650).

The trickiest part of this install was the routing of the fuel line (shown with the firesleeve). The position of the gascolator on the firewall was entirely my choice, and was specifically meant to allow a very short and direct flexible fuel line connection between it and the fuel fitting on the carb.

Unfortunately, the distance between the fittings ended up so short that the fuel line didn't have the flex needed to bridge the two fittings. My only solution was to loop the hose around the carb with a slow incline. I wasn't thrilled with this mainly because it meant my planing to keep the hose short had failed. An additional challenge was keeping the hose away from the throttle linkage (Image 1). With some creative use of stand-offs (Image 2) (automobile oil hose and high-temp zip ties), the hose only moves about 0.5", and now doesn't touch the control linkage. The final length of the loop should also do a good job of absorbing the vibration between the motor/carb and the attach point on the firewall.

For anyone following in my footsteps, go ahead and mount the gascolator more towards the center of firewall, with the exit facing the pilot side of the aircraft. That should allow for a nice short section of fuel hose to run from there to the carb fuel inlet.
