Brief Description:  Cowl paint part 1

I've decided to try the latex paint option for the plane. Paint adds weight, so I want to minimize that. Also, I can't bring myself to spend thousands on a paint job for a plane that is meant to epitomise 'practicalily'. Good quality acryllic latex paint is still

Understanding the challenges in getting paint to stick to bare aluminum, I have decided to follow the following procedure for surface prep:

1.Degrease (Simple Green)
2. water rinse
3. Acetone/Ethyl acetate wipe down
4. ScotchBrite the surface
5. Water rinse - wipe down
6. Stewart Systems etching solution (10 min)
7. water rinse -wipe down
8. let dry
9. Rustoleum premium latex primer

On a test sample, it took a fair bit of abuse. Not as durable as a 2-part aircraft product of course, but it's not going to see a lot of road debris etc... And if it does see some scratches, these can easily be touched up in seconds.

I've also modified the paint scheme from last year; I think it still looks great, but now there's less surface to paint.
