Brief Description:  Air vents Part 1

I'm waiting for the roll servo from GRT as it needs to be installed before I can put in stuff like the ADS-B "in" antenna and brake lines. Completion of those items paves the way for the rudder pedals and ultimately control surface installation.

In the mean time, I've been investigating how to bring outside air into the cabin for ventilation. The easy solution is the snap-in vents from ACS that you put in the windows. However, that felt a little too low-tech, and I wondered about leaks, deteriorating friction fit over time, and control over the airflow.

Through some protracted ebay transactions with an aircraft parts dealer, I ended up with a set of salvaged aluminum eyeball vents for free. They are high quality, and bring back fond memories of my airline travels to europe as a child (since that's where I was first exposed to this ingenious mechanism).

But how to attach them to the structure? After careful consideration, I decided to fabricate a slanted 'boss' to which they could be securely fastened. This is simply a 0.016" cylinder cut at an angle, and is very similar to how one crafts a DIY heat muff to go over an exhaust tube. 0.032" retainer rings were fabricated to create a strong 'sandwich' to squeeze onto the flimsy 0.016" flanges (not shown here). The fuselage side gets a 0.050" flange with holes tapped to 8-32. With grey RTV added to seal gaps, the completed 'boss' is lightweight and very robust.
