Brief Description:  Cowling fasteners Part 2

The upper panel gets a slightly different treatment. In image 1, you see the male insert that mates with the female receptacle. The male insert consists of three components: the grommet that inserts into the 15/32" hole in this panel, a retaining ring that keeps the grommet from falling out, and the phillips-head spring-loaded insert that actually does the retaining.

In its completed form, the insert will stay with the panel so you never have to worry about losing the parts when you open the panel.

These particular receptacles are the adjustable-depth versions (more expensive) that let you fine-tune the 'grip' of the assembly. So the first time you cinch it all together, you essentially screw in the inserts until flush with the grommet head. I then left the assembly intact and undid the top panel where it attached to the top of the cowling, exposing the quarter-turn assemblies, which allowed an easy final adjustment. The adjustability will come in handy if/when I add some teflon tape to the metal edges to prevent chafing.

Image 3 shows the completed cowling. I've said this elsewhere, but the cowling seems to fit (and complement) the fuselage perfectly.
