From the seated position in the plane, I can easily reach into the box with my left hand and touch the far end. You can see the USB receptable in there too, though the intent is to be able to insert a usb cord by "feel", not by sight, and simply leave it in there.

The door is 0.032" material recycled from a cutout elsewhere in the panel, I'll probably attach a 'clip' on the door to hold additional documents etc...though I am mindful that protrusions on the panel can sometimes be a source of injury in an accident. For that same reason, I am still debating the best latch for this application. I even considered what position the door would be in if the latch failed (either in flight or in a crash) and the risk of injury from contact with the door, which is why it opens from the bottom rather than the top. It's also be easier to 'emergency' latch it under the panel with a bungee or string when it opens this way. I was thinking of using one of those cool aluminum latches out of the airlines (like the ones that hold the food carts in place in the galleys) but those are seriously super-sized for this application. I admit, it's somewhat disadvantageous to have to fumble with the door and reach inside with the same hand, but I think the trade-off for safety is fair.

The attach flanges are of the box itself are also facing 'inward' so the box itself can be as large as possible, while also providing a 'lip' to keep contents from inadvertently sliding out when the door is open. I will be installing rubber or plastic flanging material to soften the metal edges when reaching inside. I would do it on the door too, except that I am not sure how to fasten it securely near the top corners, nor am I sure about how to deal with the aesthetics of not covering the hinge section. Fortunately, the door can be mounted with as many spacers as needed to have it sit 'proud' of the panel, for any clearance issues that come up later. Could even make the door out of tinted lexan for frangibility in a crash. We'll see.
