Brief Description:  Fuel Line install (part 1)

Here's my take on the fuel line set-up in the Rebel. The MAM option is to route flexible hose through the corner bulkheads on either side of the fuselage, all the way to the firewall, and ultimately the gascolator. There has been some discussion around the need for low-point drains in the Rebel, as some feel that the fuel line routing and the three-point attitude would conspire to have water collect at the bend just behind the doors. I have convinced myself that since MAM wasn't too concerned about it, and many certificated aircraft have only wing drains and gascolators (as does the Rebel), I was O.K. with no additional drains.

Many on the list have stated that flexible hose in the "walls" would be a bear to change if it leaked, and apparently it will eventually leak. Possibly as a result of this liability, many have opted to install a solid "exposed" aluminum line attached to the fuselage with Adel clamps. Easy to inspect, but the drawback is susceptibility to damage from human activity in the cockpit.

Enter my scenario. I was going to go with the exposed fuel lines as well. However, with this option, a section right below the door post would have a total of four very important items crossing and intermingling with one another: I moved my seatbelt attach point below the door sill to make exiting the aircraft more pleasant. The trouble is it now sits at exactly the same height as the rudder cable which must also pass through this area. Finally, the aileron torque tube also runs horizontally just below the rudder cable, and moves up and down somewhat with the movement of the flaperon setting. Sending a fuel line through that intersection (with all the nylon guides and protection that would require) was too much. MAM says it's safe to run flexible hose through the bulkheads.....why don't we follow the manual for once? Sort of....

You can see the routing I chose in image 1. My idea here was to keep the run from the rear door bulkhead as straight as possible right down to the penetration thro
