Brief Description:  Plugged original fuel vents, wing tip work

Today I plugged the original fuel vents and made some progress on my 3rd attempt to get the wing tips to fit correctly.

It was reasonably warm today, so I mixed up some JB Weld. It mixes thicker in cold weather. Once I got it mixed in a small vial, I partially filled a syringe (one of the type used to give kids medicine orally) with the JB and squirted some in each of the original fuel tank vents. Then I taped a small piece of cork strip (waxy paper side up) to keep it from flowing back out over the hole. If things go according to plan the JB will settle to the bottom of the vent tube and dry into a plug.

Next, I continued to work on the pilot side wing tip pieces for the 3rd time. This time I did a few things different. First, I did not try to get a perfect fit. Based on what I have seen at Open Hangar Days, there is a lot of leeway in this matter. Second, I have the wings on the plane instead of vertically in the cradle. Third, I realized I must have been misinterpreting the instructions about trimming the flange off the rear section. The forward flange adds a lot of rigidity that was missing in my earlier attempts. Fourth, I used a band saw to make the large cut in the forward section which provided a much cleaner line. Fifth, the top of the forward section is paper thin plastic that wanted to tear if I even looked at it sideways, so I wrapped the edges of the thinnest areas with Gorilla tape to hopefully provide some strength and resistance to tearing. As I said, the temperature was reasonable today so I felt ok working with the plastic. I won't touch it when it gets cold and the plastic tends to be brittle. Ended up with the tips partially cleco'd in place and looking good.
