Leading Edge & Tank Installation - 12 hours

Next, dad came out and we were able to set the MSP-44 pop rivets in the last rib of the leading edge. These were very difficult, and required both of our hands. Dad ended up reaching in through the lightening holes from the inboard end, and I came up through a hole in the spar. The MSP rivets are difficult to set!

Next, dad squeezed all the rivets that hold the leading edge skin to the spar, completing the installation of the leading edge. While he was doing that, I finished deburring, dimpling, and priming the remaining ribs on the wing that I hadn't gotten the other day.

We then finished deburring, dimpling, and priming the inboard top wing skin and wing walk doubler. While those were drying, we decided to attach the tank to the wing. First, we attached a small pigtail of wire to the fuel level sensor on the back of the tank. This is inaccessible once the tank is installed on the wing. We then installed the tank on the wing, putting a screw in every other hole like the instructions say.

As we were putting screws in where the tank meets the rest of the leading edge, we noticed that the tank skin was pillowing in between where the screws were in a few places on the top side of the wing.

Other builders have experienced this, and thankfully they have come up with a solution. It requires removing the tank from the wing, drilling out rivets in the leading edge/rib/joint plate joint that aligns with where the pillowing occurs, and installing a shim. This worked out great, but it took us three iterations! It was very annoying to put the tank back on with all those screws, only to see it pillowing in another spot. Finally we got it fixed and installed the tank for (hopefully) the last time.

Here is a picture of the shimmed area - if you look close you can see the shim in between the skin and the joint plate - also notice the rivets have been removed.

Finally, the money shots - the entire leading edge of the wing installed with no clecos!
