Re-dimpled Rudder Skins - 1 hour Today I took dad out to Falcon Field, mainly to see Jerry and get his advice on what to do about my rudder skins, but also to show dad around down there.
We decided to just re-dimple all of my rudder skins and stiffeners to accept AN426AD4 rivets. After that we stood around and talked RV's and checked out Jerry's airplane.
Jerry ended up giving me his VS/Rudder stand and his wing cradle.
I emailed Van's and asked what I should do about the oversize holes in the skins, and this is their response:
"Matt,
It sounds like you have over deburred the holes initially, then drilling out to #30 finished it off. What I would suggest is to start over with new rudder skins and stiffeners. That way you can be ensured that your plane is built to spec. The skins are .020" rather than .016". We have no technical data on what issues you would run into if you used all NAS1097 rivets on your rudder. Let me know if you need additional assistance. Thanks
Joe Vans Aircraft"
I then re-emailed them to ask what they think about using all AD4 rivets - and this is their response:
"Matt,
I would think that the AD4 rivets would work fine. They are just a little harder to rivet due to their size. Good luck! Thanks
Joe Vans Aircraft"
I'm going to just try using the AD4's and if I screw it up, I'll buy new parts.
8/16/2007 Re-ordered Rudder - 0 hours Well, after wasting two weeks trying to save my mistake, I gave in tonight and re-ordered R-901-R, R-901-L, and all the R-915's. I got to dad's and fired everything up and set up to back rivet. I got to inspecting the holes on the stiffeners and there were tiny radial cracks in most of them. I decided to just bite the bullet and chalk this one up to experience. New parts cost $176 with shipping.
8/28/2007 Rudder stiffeners - 1 hour I spent an hour or so on the plane today. I rounded all the corners on all the stiffeners for the rudder. I then clecoed and match drilled stiffeners A & B to the right skin, being very
