Brief Description:  Riveted fairing nutplates to the wings

The wing root fairing attach holes just forward of the main spar are very close to the tank inboard rib and spar. The plans call for K1100-08 nutplates in this location but we would have to remove the tanks to rivet them on. We thus decided to rather use MS21053-L08 nutplates. There are not enough of these in the kit but fortunately another RV-8 pilot at our airfield could help us out. (Thanks Dawie)

Dimpling these holes was also a challenge and we had to make our own "close quarter" dimple die. We used an AN509-8R8 screw as the male and it worked like a charm.

Drilled / dimpled / machine countersunk the remaining holes as per instructions and riveted all the nutplates to attach the fairings. The nutplates at the bottom of the spar flange were also a challenge and we had to make a special bucking bar to set the rivets.

The plans call for a #40 piloted countersink cutter to machine countersink the W-702 wing upper inboard skins after installing the nutplates. This is incorrect and we used a #30 instead.
