Brief Description:  Installing wings on fuselage I

These wings are somewhat heavy and difficult to handle in tight quarters. Some advance preparation is required before setting out to install the wings. Fellow EAA chapter members and RV builders Bill Swatling and Kyle Boatright graciously gave up their Saturday and spent it with me helping to hang the wings. Thanks guys. The front and rear wing spars are pilot drilled to 3/16". Before putting the wings up to the fuselage you need to check to see if there is any difference in where the holes are located from the left to right wing. I started by clamping a piece of plywood under the wing that spans from the front to the rear wing spars. Then I measured from the bottom of the pilot holes down to the wood. It doesn't matter if the front and rear measurements aren't the same but you want both front spar measurements and both rear spar measurements to be the same. Any differences in these angles can affect the angle of incidence. My front spar measurements were the same and my rear spar measurements were off by 1/64". Since the front spar measurements were the same I was good to go ahead and bench drill my front spar to 1/64" undersize. In order to drill a straight hole in the spar I made a drill jig on the drill press out of a bucking bar. I then put the jig up to the pilot hole in the spar and lightly clamped it in place. I slowly started the drill which centered the jig then I tightened up on the clamps. This insures that you will get a nice straight hole. The rear spars are drilled on the airplane and this will correct the small amount of differences in the angle.
