Brief Description:  Elevator Rigging

Today I worked on final rigging of the elevator. When I initially rigged the elevator I found that the spacer/control stop that limited down elevator that had been installed in the quick build kit was too short. The degree of movement was outside of the rigging parameters found in section 15 of the construction manual. I contacted Van's and they told me to extend the control stop to get the correct amount of movement.

I drilled out the 4 rivets that hold in the control stop/spacer. I then fabricated a new control stop/spacer that was 1/4 inch longer than the original. I used the original one to trace the shape and then cut it out with the band saw. I then used the holes in the original to match drill holes in the new control stop. I clecoed the control stop in place and then cut 1/16 inch off the left side to make both elevator horns hit at the same time. It worked out perfectly and I got 24.3 degrees of down elevator deflection. The limit is 20 minimum, 25 maximum.

I then moved on to the up travel limit. I filed the control stop at the back of the tail so that both elevator horns met the stop at the same time. I ended up with 26 degrees of up elevator deflection. 25 is the minimum and 30 is the maximum.

After that was done I removed the forward control stop and primed it. I also removed the horizontal stabilizer and elevator from the fuselage to get access to the rivet holes on the aft upper skin and the aft bulkhead. Then I reamed those holes.
