Brief Description:  Sealing the Tanks

I finished the left tank today. I started the day by riveting the last anti hangup bracket to the stiffener. Then I safety wired the flop tube to the bulkhead fitting. Then I installed, flared and torqued the breather tube. After that I installed the flop tube and torqued the nut.

After doing all of those things and double checking that everything on the interior of the tank was installed, I mixed up sealant and cleaned the mating surfaces of the ribs and baffle. I ran a bead of sealant down both sides of the skin over the top of the baffle rivet holes and also smeared sealant on all of the ribs. Then I dropped the baffle down on to the ribs. I 100% clecoed the baffle to skin joints and also clecoed the rib to baffle holes.

I moved on to pop riveting all the top and bottom baffle to rib holes and then pop riveted all of the z-brackets to the baffle and ribs. Once that was done I used the rivet gun and riveted the z-brackets to the end ribs. I encapsulated all the rivets with sealant and then moved on to the baffle to skin rivets.

I used the pneumatic squeezer to squeeze all the baffle to skin rivets. I also dabbed each hole with sealant before inserting the rivets. After squeezing all the rivets I encapsulated all of them with sealant.

The last items accomplished tonight were installing the tank cover plate and the fuel sender. Both of them were installed with sealant around the perimeter. I also smeared sealant on all of the screw threads. I tested the fuel sender with an ohm meter and it checked good.

Finally, I wiped all the smeared sealant off the outside of the tank.
