Brief Description:  Riveting the Left Aileron

Today started off with countersinking the holes in the counterbalance pipe. That was pretty straightforward. I then moved on to deburring everything. The inside of the counterbalance pipe was a challenge. I ended up using a couple of different cleaning brushes for a 20 gauge shotgun which worked pretty well.

From there moved on to dimpling everything that needed dimpling. Here again was a challenge since the curve of the skin around the counterbalance pipe would not have dimpled well on the C frame. I ended up clecoing the pipe in the skin and then used the dimple set from the C frame in the rivet gun and used the pipe as the female dimple die. It worked great!

After that I blind riveted the counterbalance pipe to the nose ribs and then clecoed on the skins. I then riveted the top of the skins to the spar. This was a bit of a pain until I decided to use my small tungsten bucking bar. That made access much easier although it was still tough to get my hands in the small space. It call came together though.

Finally, I riveted the main ribs and the nose ribs to the top of the skins using a pneumatic squeezer.

The final step I did tonight was installing the A-406-1 and A-407 brackets. I'm not sure why the plans have you do that here. The nuts holding the brackets on will interfere with riveting the bottom end ribs to the skin and the spar. I didn't fully tighten these nuts yet. I'll do that once the aileron is finished.
