Brief Description:  Assembling the Wing Skeleton

Today was a day of frustration, and possibly expense. I began riveting the wing ribs to the main spar of the right wing. Because of the flanges on the main spar there is no way to get a squeezer in the space and because the manufactured heads of the rivets have to go on the rib flanges it requires a double offset rivet set to set the rivets.

At first I had trouble with the double offset rivet set turning in the rivet gun. The first rivet I did was not pretty and I ended up drilling it out. I found comments from people online suggesting duct taping the rivet set so that it would not turn in the gun. I did that and it worked great.

The the trouble began. I was working along really well when the rivet gun slipped and I sheared the manufactured head off of a rivet. When I tried to drill it out I ended up making a mess of the rib hole. Hopefully I didn't mess up the spar. I sent photos to Vans to see what my options are and then moved on. A couple of ribs later I sheared another rivet head, this one so far off that it is even with the rib. I'm not sure what to do with it.

Then, in the same rib, I let the bucking bar move off of a rivet and would up smearing it. I drilled the manufactured head off with no problem but now I can't get the shank out of the hole. I have tried everthing I can think of. Tapping it out with a punch doesn't work, pulling it with my modified cutters doesn't work. I now have a shop head that is extremely deformed and doesn't give any pulling surface and I have removed the manufactured head.

I'm so frustrated right now I'm about ready to give up on the whole project.
