Brief Description:  Building the Tie Down Assembly

I spent the entire day today building the tie-down assembly. I started by cutting the AEX stock to length to form the tie down bar. I then fabricated four W-726 spacers out of the bar stock provided in the kit. I actually ended up making another one because one of them shifted on me when I was match drilling them to the spar. I measured and drilled the match hole in the tie down bar. Then I used a 1" hole saw to cut the lightening holes in the spacers. Finally, I clamped the bars and spacers to the spar and drilled all the holes. This was a royal pain! I couldn't get any of my clamps to really fit well enough to hold everything together so I ended up doing it in stages. It came out ok.

After match drilling all the holes I disassembled everything and drilled the holes for the platenuts, using a platenut as a guide. I countersunk the spacers to accept flush rivets and I then deburred all the holes and riveted on the platenuts.

The last thing I did was tap the bottom of each of the tie down bars with a 3/8-16 tap one inch deep as shown on DWG 15A.
