22nd flight
Since my Sonex is running with so much more power now, I decided to redo my maximum load test. At first, I added 3-50 pound bags of salt and went for a spin around the pattern. It really didn’t seem that much different. Then I added another 2-50 pound bags, which brought the total passenger weight to 250 pounds. That made the total weight equal to 250, plus 200 for me, plus 68 pounds of fuel and 670 pounds of airplane for a grand total of 1188 pounds. Normally, I get off the runway in about 7 or 8 seconds at full throttle, at max load it took 12 seconds. She was able to climb at about 200-300 fpm so I guess she did all right. Once at pattern altitude, I leveled off and flew the pattern 3 or 4 times (there was no one else around) and I could definitely tell a difference in how she handled, not near as much fun! If I were to do this with a 250 pound person aboard, it would be strictly for sightseeing, or to get someplace, not to do anything fun. The biggest problem was really that all that salt was in the way – it was hard to reach the brake handle. I took some pictures of all the salt in the cabin, but I haven’t figured out how to get the pictures off of my phone yet.
After I removed all the salt, I went back up just to do some ‘yanking and banking’ to really see the difference. It was like a different airplane, so much more fun; like comparing a sports car to a mini van.
So At least I have the full load testing out of the way
Flight time: 1.1 Total time: 30.6 hours Number of landings: 4 total landings 79.
