Ninth flight
Today the weather cooperated a little bit so I was able to fly – first time in two long weeks. There were a few other planes out and about the airport today so I took off and simply played around a few miles west of the airport. I still haven’t really done any actual flight tests where I check the performance of the airplane, mostly what I’ve been doing is checking out the pilot instead. Once all the traffic left I was able to do 6 ‘stop and goes’ and am getting far more comfortable with landings. In fact, I’d say that after 28 landings in my Sonex, I am already better, and more confident, landing my Sonex than I am in the airplane I trained on.
It seems that during every flight, I hear something that ‘concerns’ me, and today was no different. Whenever I got the speed up to say 100 MPH, I kept hearing a high-pitched ‘tinging’ sound. Not sure what it was, I landed and took a look and discovered that the last time I installed one of the hinge pins at the bottom-front of the cowl, I missed all the hinge rungs except for the first one, so the bottom of the cowl was flapping and hitting when I got the speed high enough. Sure glad it was something easy.
Flight time: 1.3 Total time: 11.2 Hours Number of landings: 6 Total landings: 38
