Sixth flight

Today was a bit exciting as I flew an airplane I built over my house! Again, I’m still just taking joy rides with my plane, learning as much about it and just getting used to how she flies.

One thing I learned was is that I should let her get more warmed up than I did. My plane is usually stored in a heated hangar, but today before I started her, she sat outside in the 20 degree weather for a few hours prior to starting. When I started her, I had to taxi way down to the end of the runway, so I taxied for awhile, and the oil temperature was around 75 when I took off. Although I could only get about 2700 RPMs on takeoff, but once she warmed at (a few minutes later) I could get over 2900 on climb out. Another lesson learned.

One bad thing I did notice is that I have to keep left rudder just a little to keep her going straight, so I’ll definitely need a trim tab on the rudder. Needing a trim tab for the rudder is something I really expected, so I made one a few months back. I think how I’ll tackle this it to use some double-sided sticky tape to tape the trim tab to the rudder and experiment with the amount of bend in the tab. Once I get the bend right I’ll rivet it to the rudder.

Lastly, plugging the side holes in my fan didn’t seem to make much difference for my cabin heat – still not much heat. I think I need to look for a stronger fan to really suck the air through the hoses and muffs. I got pretty cold today and it was in the 30's outside.
