Brief Description: Air worthiness inspection
|

|
The past few days I have been communicating with the DAR trying to find a time when we both are available for the Air worthiness inspection. Today is the day.
To prepare for this inspection, I assembled two big binders. The first binder included copies (or originals if I was supposed to keep them) of all the paperwork I submitted for the plane. It also contained the entire build log printed out, and all the receipts from virtually everything I purchased for this project. The second binder included every instruction sheet I received for everything. This includes all the Sonex instruction sheets and assembly instructions, as well as all the instructions sheets for every accessory I added (Transceiver, ELT, Enigma, Lights, etc). Both binders are pretty full.
Then came the time for the actual inspection! The DAR really knew what he wanted to look at and look for, as he spent approximately 1.5 hours pouring over (and under) my airplane. I had to remove every inspection plate (I should have done that BEFORE he got there!) and he checked everything - it was obvious he had done a few Sonexes before. He approved of the things I did different that the plans, like the flip-back canopy, nut plates instead of sheet metal screws, etc.
In the end, he informed me of four things: 1) I failed to tighten one Jam nut (on the left Flap), 2) I should cut some of the excess lengths off the cotter pins because they may gouge into surrounding aluminum (or hands if I get close), 3) I should use the high-temp RTV to protect the inside of the fire sleeve at the ends so oil/fuel cannot get inside the fire sleeve, and 4) I should remove/replace a couple of zip ties I used to secure the excess wire for my (to be installed later) cabin heater fan to the engine mount. That’s all that was wrong with my airplane.
So, today I have an airplane that is COMPLETELY legal to fly, if I so desire! The package and information from the EAA was absolutely outstanding in preparation for this.
