Today was the big moving day to the airport. I rented a 4-wheeled car transport trailer for the fuselage and I build a wing carrier for the back of our F-150 for the wings (one at a time). The first load was with the left wing in the back of the trailer to the airport. It was convenient that the U-haul place was right next to the airport as I picked up the trailer on the way home. The second trip to the airport is as shown in images 1 and 2.
I was a little apprehensive because the wing spar actually extended out the back of the truck enough so that in just the right circumstances it could have smashed part of the engine. Fortunately, the geometry of it was such that it would have taken a quick left turn coupled with a really big down-hill slope to cause the spar to hit the engine. Fortunately, we only had an 11 mile trip with very few turns and essentially no hills.
It was an exciting day, yet a sad day as I no longer have a plane to work on. It was nice always having something to work on right at home.
I’ve been kicking around the idea starting a scratch-build project soon. Something like a scratch-built Fokker DR-1 tri-plane would be really cool. I’ll have to keep it to myself for awhile – the wife would freak out if I told her I wanted to start building another plane right away. Maybe I can start with little parts and not tell her anything for a while?
