Brief Description: Cylinders and piston installation
|

|
I stopped at Sonex on Tuesday and talked to Kerry. He said that the end play measurement I took wasn’t way out of whack and gave me an extra set of shims, so now I have the right amount of shim setting aside like the instructions say.
The past few days I’ve been installing the cylinders and pistons, and as usual I keep screwing up. I measured and figured out how many shims to install under the cylinder for the 7 to 1 compression ratio for regular car gas. Then I got the cylinders and pistons all prepped and ready to be installed. Installing the first cylinder went fairly well, and then as I was installing the snap ring which holds the wrist pin in place for the second piston it slipped out of my needle-nose pliers, through the open garage door and into the gravel driveway. Not gonna find that one. I stopped at an auto parts store on my way home from work tonight, but they didn’t have the ‘wire’ snap rings, they had the flat type with the little holes instead. I thought maybe that type would work, but once installed, I didn’t like how it fit. So I’ll be making another trip to town tomorrow trying to find the ‘wire’ type snap ring.
Something like this might seem trivial to most people, but I would remember that one of the snap rings was different and fit differently and I would obsess over this stupid snap ring for as long as I owned the plane. I could just see it; I’d hear a sound and the first thing I would think of would be that that snap ring had somehow fallen out and the engine was about to throw a rod.
When building this engine, I’ve tried to be as anal as possible concerning the directions, ensuring that I’ve read and complied with every word. Before I go on to the next page, I read through the instructions for the current page again until I’m satisfied that I properly performed every step. Once I’m confident that I properly performed every step, I write on every page that I "completed every step on that page perfectly".
