Brief Description: Replaced the Southco fasteners with Nut plates
Took a little vacation to Vermont to attend a wedding for my wife’s nephew. It was tough not working on the plane for so long when I am so close.
Since I installed the Southco fasteners that are used to secure the cowling, I’ve never liked how they worked. It was hard to tell if they were engaged properly and half the time when I thought they were engaged properly, they apparently weren’t because the slightest jar and they would release. So today I replaced all the Southco fasteners with my favorite; nut plates and screws. I didn’t immediately do the one Southco fasteners that holds the fuel cover in place, but I may to that one also. I also drilled out the canopy latch holes so the pins will fit easier.
Doing these little things took half the day and I spent the other half of the day lending a hand to Neil, who is building Sonex 1391. If I’m not careful, Neil may be flying before I am.
