Brief Description: Fit the cowl

After quite a few trial fits and modifications to the baffles, today I was finally able to re-install the cowling and get all the pins in. Once that was done, I pushed the fuselage outside and started the AeroVee again. I let the engine run for a few minutes until the temperatures started to come up and then I shut it off and let it sit out in the hot sun. Hopefully all the heat will let the cowl expand so that it fits better. I’ve tried this before and it does seem to work, at least a little, so hopefully next time the pins will go in easier.
In the afternoon, I went inside and worked on the upholstery again. I hadn’t touched the upholstery since the winter, but when I installed the seat belts, I figured out that I forgot to provide a hole in the seat cushion for the seat belts. So today I disassembled the seat cushion and sewed in a hole for the seat belts to go through. The side panels I made, work and look pretty good, however, the seat cushion I made is obviously not professional. Sewing this cushion was really out of my league; I’m really not good enough at sewing to try something so difficult, but I’m going with it for now. It looks good from far, but far from good. Another thing I may have screwed up on concerning the cushion; when I saw the one’s that Sonex sells, it seemed too thin to be comfortable for any length of time, so I made my cushion out of 2” foam instead of the 1” foam they used. While this may be much more comfortable, it does tend to push the pilot and passenger a little closer to the sticks and their mechanisms (which are at the same level as crotches!). I’ll have to wait and see how that works.
