Brief Description:  Sonex Fly-in

Today I drove over to the Sonex Fly-in. I had hoped to FLY there this year, but that was just not to be. It was nice to compare my work with others and see that mine really isn’t that bad – in fact, it’s pretty good.

One of the things I wanted to compare was how flush everyone’s canopy was to the turtle deck when closed. I saw a couple that were more flush than mine, but most were about the same, maybe a little better – but none were perfectly flush.

At the fly-in, there was quite a spread in the quality of paint jobs. A few were obviously professional paint jobs that looked terrific and a few that obviously were NOT professional – so I’m satisfied with the quality of the job I did on my invasion stripes.

I also wanted to see more instrument panels; and while it may just be a matter of preference I thought my panel to be the simplest and cleanest design. I like my panel much more than any I saw there.

The last thing I wanted to look at was the difference between the painted “stars and bars” on Bob Mika’s plane to the Decals on Charlie Radford’s plane – since I was pretty sure they would both be there again. I thought that the painted ones looked a little better, and would probably cost a little less, they would definitely be more work. Still have to ponder that decision.
