Had the day off from work today so I spent the day working on the cowl. I cut the hole for the gascolator drain, and ended up having to move the gascolator up as it hung too far down. That was the only major headache. At the end of the day I actually had all the pins in and the cowl almost fit – some of the pins go in awfully hard, so I started up the AeroVee and let it heat up the cowl. That should make the pins go in a little easier.
I’ve seen on many other builder’s logs where the builder had to add a little more material here or there to get the cowl to fit. I’m going to have to add about a 1/4” on top and 3/8” on the bottom to the front (behind the prop) to make up the room between the cowl and the prop. I’ll also have to add just a little fiberglass at the lower-aft ends where the cowl meets the fuselage, and some fiberglass to reduce the size of the hole I made for the gascolator (cut it in the wrong place). I should be able to get this all done tomorrow.
