I've been saving painting all the tips (elevator, rudder and wing) until all were ready to save paint/work. So today I finally had all the tips ready. What I planned to do was to paint all the tips, (plus the wheel pants and probably the engine cowl too) with something called Killer Chrome. At least from their website and their catalog, this stuff looks real close to chrome and I'm hoping real close to polished aluminum.
I started by sanding off the shiny gelcoat on the tips, followed by 'filler' primer and then Bondo to fill in a few places, then more 'filler' primer and more sanding. After priming and sanding 2 or 3 more times the tips looked pretty smooth. Then I have to follow the instructions for the Killer Chrome. These instructions start with a coat of jet black paint, following by a coat of clear. Unfortunately, after the clear coat I have to wait 24 hours before I spray on the chrome, so I'll get to this step tomorrow. Real curious to see how this stuff works.
I've seen a few Sonexes where it looked like the builder was trying to make the tips look chrome and like the polished aluminum, but to me it just looked like they painted the tips with silver paint. Hopefully this Killer Chrome works better.
