18th flight.
Yesterday, I installed a stretched-out screen door spring around the exhaust pipe, inside the heat muff, to enhance the amount of heat transferred to the air as it passes through the muff on its way to the cabin.
I had changed to the bigger number needle in an attempt to get more RPMs out of the Aerovee, but the engine ran like crap with the bigger needle, so I went back to the original needle and today I spent a few hours re-tweaking the carburetor to get it running well again. Somehow, I got lucky as now I get about 100 more RPMs than I was getting. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.
After the tweaking was completed, I went for another joy ride for about an hour and it seemed as though I was seeing more RPMs and slightly less EGTs, both good things. Also, I tried the heater with the extra spring installed inside the heat muff, and it worked much better. Although the outside temperature was a balmy 30 degrees (instead of 10 like the last few days) the temperature inside the cabin was a warm 67 degrees. So much better.
Flight time: 1.2 Total time 23.9 hours Number of landings: 1 total landings 64.
