Brief Description:  First flight

This morning, October 23rd, 2010 at approximately 8:00 AM, Sonex 1292 took to the sky for the first time. Since I have less than 40 hours total PIC time, my friend and CFI, Jim Wheeler, took her aloft. Jim said that she ran true, with no ‘heavy wing’ and all the controls worked smoothly.

Unfortunately, I forgot to mention that some Sonexs have an issue where the engine produces less RPMs at full throttle, than just slightly less than full throttle. This meant that for the first circuit or two, Jim was only seeing 2800-2900 RPM, but once he backed off the throttle a bit, he saw RPMs up near 3100. It looks like I may need to do a little more ‘tweaking’ on the carburetor.

It’s too bad the weather didn’t continue to cooperate, because after about a 10 minute flight, Jim had to land because a rain front was moving in. But before the rain moved in, it was perfect weather for a first flight; high overcast clouds (so no bumps) and no wind.

Jim was a little surprised by how fast this little Sonex flies. He aborted his first attempt to land because he was still too fast. On Jim’s second attempt, he made a beautiful, smooth landing.
