Brief Description:

Got back from a 3 day today, didn't get into shop until after 2000.

Decided to rivet the rudder spar R-608PP and R-607PP reinforcement plates, along with respective nut plates. As you can see in pic 1, plans specify AN470AD4-5 for all plates to R-902 spar. My instinct told me these rivets are too long for the job, but I squeeze the first one in. Well, you can see the result in pic 2. The shop head is deformed, is too wide to fit in the gauge hole, and too tall to fit the gauge height notch. Crap, I knew it was too long. Decided to use 4-4 rivets on R-607PP. The shop head is now perfect diameter and height. Figured the 4-5 rivets are actually only for the two nutplate rivets, due to the extra depth of the nutplate. Sqeezed 4-5 rivets in the nutplate. The diameter is good, and if anything, the height just barely short.

For me, the proof is which rivets fit the gauge. 4-4 worked for me for the R607PP to the R-902 spar. When you add the nutplate to the mix, the 4-5 worked. As I have said before, I am not an expert in RV construction, your results may vary. From now on, I will check how much a rivet protrudes before it gets worked, especially when my instinct says it's wrong.

Also, if you look in pic 1 above the plate, you can see the counterweight rib where it attaches to the spar. You will also notice no rivet specification given, it must be figured out by the builder. Given how many times the plans have been wrong, maybe it's a better way.

Finished tonight with dimpling the counterweight skin.
