Brief Description:

Today was one of those days where you do a lot of work, but have little to show for it.

Finished match drilling, marking, and deburring all elevator hinge plates, doublers, and the spars. I find it very helpful to mark my progress with taped messages on parts. D & D is not Dungeons and Dragons, it is Drilled and Deburred. Also deburred spar edges (E-702).

On a side note, in the beginning I wore a surgery type mask when deburring on the bench grinder. The dust gets pretty far. Haven't been using mask lately. Today I cleaned out my nose with a tissue after doing the spars, and is was clear I had aluminum dust in my nose. I don't think it is a huge deal, but I plan on wearing the mask from now on. Why not?

The big project today was filing the right elevator counter weight. You can see from pic 2 how much material has to go. Pic 1 shows my setup to collect as much filings as possible, and keep the piece in place. Soon after this pic, I added a pair of composite carpentry shims under the clamp to act as a fence to keep from filing past my mark. Worked really well. My mark was created by photocopying the plans (pic2) and cutting out a template to mark on the counter weight. Easily spent over an hour of filing alone.

The counter weight is solid lead. As we all know, lead is a potent neurotoxin. I took full precautions during the job, including putting a bag in my garbage can to keep al the filings separate. When the bulk of the filing was done, I was cleaning up the edges and the file caught and the weight fell into the can, punching right through the bag. While most of the filings stayed in the bag, I was a little miffed. My goody two shoes efforts undone. I have no idea how to properly dispose of lead. We have a charitable organization that will take your unused or unwanted household chemicals and waste and dispose of them properly for no charge. Awesome place. Maybe I'll call about lead. Who knows.
