Brief Description:

After a brief hiatus, I decided to tackle some rudder assembly today. I had been avoiding working on the R-405PD rudder horn until I had gotten a vixen file (see log entry of 6/10). Well, I've had the vixen file for awhile, just still avoiding using it. Today I clamped the rudder horn in the vice and vixened the stuffing out of it. It went very well using just the fine side of the file. Had to keep checking the fit which increased the time spent, but very happy with results. Polished out the file marks on the bench grinder.

The instructions tell you to cleco the R-904 bottom rib and the R-405PD rudder horn to the R-902 rudder spar, then slide rudder shim R-917 in between to match drill it between the other two parts. Well, cleco clamps are strong, and I saw no way to slide the shim in without scratching it up badly. The plans show that the top edge of the shim abuts the bottom of the R-904 flange (clecoed to spar in image 1) but with the two touching, my hole marks didn't line up with the holes in the rudder horn. I tweaked it down until i could see three plus marks centered in the rudder horn holes, then taped the shim to the spar, clecoed the rudder horn (along with R606PP reinforcement plate on forward side of spar) to the spar and match drilled it out.

Finished with attaching the rudder counterbalance skin R-913 skin to its two ribs and match drilling.
