Brief Description: Commenced Riveting the HS Skins
|
|
I started work riveting the HS skins this evening. The first task is to rivet the Nose ribs in. There is not a lot of room to work in the skins when clecoed to the rivets. The end ribs on each skin are easy as they can be squeezed. But I had to use the rivet gun on the middle ribs on each side.
Initially, I had no bucking partner, so I was unable to complete the job completely. Instead, I did the top three rivets on each side of the nose ribs. This is the first time I have attempted riveting skins with the gun without a partner, so I took it very very slowly.
Over Christmas, I purchased an ACAT 2X rivet gun from the Yard Store which I plan to use for all the -3 rivets. It is a lot easier than the 3X gun for these smaller ones.
Another problem is the orientation of the flanges. I am right handed, but was also able to use the 2X left handed, though that is not my preference. Working left handed ensured that I did not get tied up in knots when working on the "other side" of the rib. I would have o say that the quality was roughly the same as myy first rivets on the right hand six months ago... I ended up having to drill out one rivet which will have to be replaced by an oops rivet.
While I would prefer to use a bucking partner, I know I need to be more independent else I will end up stopping work too often. I think the key for me is go slowly. If it starts to go wrong... Stop and have a good think about it before continuing. I have heard people use the rule that 2 mistakes means stop and think about it for 2 hours... I am not sure about having a rule, but the concept is correct...

Looks like there is plenty of room, but there is not...
