Brief Description:  Attended SAAA Metalworking Workshop At Narromine

Attended the SAAA Sheetmetal Workshop in Narromine this weekend. The course was presented by Mark Rowe and Jamie Bell. Constructed the Vans Aircraft test pieces. The pieces came out well in general. The real learnings for me were:

- Riveting - In particular flush riveting need more practice before I will be comfortable. It was a good start but there is further work that needs to be done here.

- Need to check all the time what is supposed to be happening. Make sure that you follow the plans and instructions. On a couple of occasions, I almost riveted on the wrong side of the work etc. Jamie taught me how to drill out rivets which I think will be invaluble ;-). Mark saved me from a couple of process errors along the way as well.

- Trailing Edge - I need to have another shot at a training edge before commiting to a real one. The short nature of the course didnt make it possible to proseal the TE, and I am guessing that would helpwith getting it all lined up. Another reread of section 5 of Vans Doco coming up.

I have a separate test piece kit which I will do in the next couple of weeks to get my eye in before starting work on the actual empennage.

Overall, it was well worth attending.
