Brief Description:  Right Elevator-Part II

Dimpled skin at spar line. Again, keep the skin convex and get a helper (see previous discussion)! Prepped (sand, scuff, solvent paint) left elevator stiffeners, counterbalance components and skin interior. Then, we riveted the reinforcement plates and nut plates to the right elevator spar. Additionally, we riveted the counterbalance assembly together. Make sure that you do not install the rivets which attach the skin to the spar! Last step before installing stiffeners is to rivet the horn to the spar and root rib.

Next, we back-riveted the stiffeners to the top skin. Trick on this is to have a helper "open" the skin while keeping the skin convex (no dents!). The local pressure the riveter applies will not dent the skin.

The last part we completed was a doozy! We riveted the spar to the top skin. As the spar points towards the front and these rivets are bucked, this operation can be painful. The technique we developed was to have the gun-man pull the skin towards him (reinforced with stiffeners; as such, will not dent) as the bucking person gently pushes down on the skin and reaches into the backside of the spar with a SMALL bucking bar. At a minimum, this is a two person operation! Also, squeeze the end and hinge point rivets!
