Brief Description:  Work Table

Acquired supplies from the local Home Depot to build at least half of the 12 foot by 4 foot work table. I decided that I wanted the table to be expandable and contractible. I used some well circulated plans from the EAA (do a search for them) and modified them to 6 foot lengths. I'm hoping that when I need the full 12 feet I can bolt it all together and keep things level. We shall see. I wanted to be able to tear things down in case I need the garage for other projects (at least until the fuse construction). Those of you who own a Volkswagen Van know what I'm talking about.
I used 2x4 by 104" and was just lucky that my wood supply worked out perfect. Using the supply sheet from the EAA plans worked out great (but use 10 footers of a six foot table). I usually screw this up and have either too much or too little, so I'm hoping this is a good omen. I used 3/4" (18mm) 9ply for the top which I had Home Depot cross cut and rip for me. I would not recommend this unless you are cutting it yourself. The rip cut is at least a half an inch off but I don’t think it will matter much. I also left 1 1/2 inch overhangs on two sides of each table for clamping which I hope will be enough for clamping. When I bolt the tables together I am hoping the resulting surface will be sturdy with the stud-on-stud contact. I didn't use any glue at all, just good quality exterior deck screws and the tables are solid. I'll probably put shelves on the lower part when I'm sure I won't move them around much. My garage floor slopes the standard way so I leveled the components before I screwed it all together.
