Brief Description: Again with the strut
|

|
Remade the 3/4" x .035" struts today by drilling the holes at either end of the slot and then drilling 5 x 1/8" ones as guides between the 2. Went back and drilled all out to 3/16". Found my old Dremel copy tool and carefully ground away until I had a nice smooth slot. (Those are not scratches on the tube but white marker) Slid the lower 5/8" x .049" strut inside and the welded retaining washer over the top and then a bolt through all 3. The McMaster-Carr 1000lb/in spring # 9295K84 pushes up against the top washer and is 3-1/2" long. I put the spring in a vise to see how far it would compress. 1-3/8" In order to preload the spring I marked 2 white lines. One at its decompressed state as in pic 2 and the other 3/8" up allowing the full 1" movement in the slot. I drilled through the lower washer where it will be finally welded. Not wanting to do that at this stage as I will wait until I'm ready to have everything painted.
