Chapter 6 Empennage Date 5/15/00 Procedure Right Elevator E-1 The first thing to build is the "V" groove cradle this is the assembly tool for the Elevator (No Photos available) Chapter 6 Empennage Date 5/15/00 Procedure Right Elevator E-1 The first task to accomplish is to layout the correct locations for the stiffeners and the locations for the hinge bracket cutouts. After I finished this I moved on to cutting the stiffeners from the angle stock provided in the kit. I made a fixture to drill the holes after I located the holes on the stiffeners. I drill one hole thru the skin into my work bench and clecoed the assembly to the bench. I was then able to drill the remaining holes with out any thing moving. I repeated this process on the other side of the Elevator skin then moved on to dimpling the stiffeners and the skin. (Image) Chapter 6 Empennage Date 5/15/00 Procedure Right Elevator E-2 I riveted the stiffeners in place. I used the back rivet technique with a " thick steel plate. Building the Elevator spar and skeleton is the same technique as the other assembles. With reinforcement plates and control armWD-405. I had to locate and drill for the bearings to the horizontal stabilizer. Then disassemble de-burr and prime. Reassemble and rivet all the parts together. (No Photos available) Chapter 6 Empennage Date 5/15/00 Procedure Elevator E-3 Before continuing I had to bend the trailing edge of the skin to complete the radius. I accomplish this task at George Lieders shop with his Break. Finding the ribs thru the skin is less complicated .The ribs are on the edge. I used a rivet fan to equally space the holes on the rib. The next task is to make the counter balance skin. After making the counter balance skin I installed the assembly on to the horizontal to align the counter balance skin. The next procedure is the same drill and cleco together After all this work I disassemble the skins from the frame, de-burr and dimpled the skins and frame.. I checked the alignment of the frame and skins. Now it time to rivet the skins on .I used the V" groove cradle to hold the skins on so I could place the clecos before riveting the skins. I used a squeezer for the outside edge. (No Photos available) Chapter 6 Empennage Date 5/15/00 Procedure Right Elevator E-3 The last procedure is to bend a large radius in the leading edge of the skins so they will overlap each other. This task is accomplish with a _" pipe from my bar clamp and duct tape. The procedure is to roll the end skin over the pipe after it has been secured to the pipe with duct tape. Once this is accomplished hold the radius in place with strips of duct tape and drill #30 holes thru both skins. After de-burring use the pull rivets to hold together (No Photos available) Chapter 6 Empennage Date 5/15/00 Procedure Left Elevator E-1 The first task to accomplish is to layout the correct locations for the stiffeners and the locations for the hinge bracket cutouts.
