Brief Description:

Rans S-19
The Rans S-19 is kit aircraft that is certified in the "experimental" category, but is eligible to be flown under "light sport aircraft" (LSA) regulations. To me this is the best of both worlds, as the "experimental" certification allows customization not allowed under LSA certification.

The choice of the S-19 was not an easy one. At Sun-N-Fun 2008, I looked at and got inside the Zenith CH601XL, Vans RV-12, and Rans S-19.

The Zenith was never really in the running, mostly because the cockpit is so small. It felt tighter than a middle airline seat.

I've always been a fan of Vans aircraft - I built an early RV-6 empennage, so I gave the RV-12 a close look. I liked the removable wings, the superb quality and sophistication of Vans kits, and the competitive pricing.

Here's what turned me off the RV-12:
- Outer fuselage skins used as floorboards
- Forward of the wing boarding
- Tip up canopy
- Fuel tank in the passenger compartment

The Rans S-19 beat the RV-12 in each of those areas. The S-19 was the most comfortable aircraft to board, sit in, and exit. Everything is a compromise, so I'd rather compromise hangar expense, having to hand-form some skins, etc. rather than safety. As a current Grumman owner, the slider canopy is a big plus for me. Since I'm on the east coast, shipping and factory access should be better for me as well.
