Brief Description:  Transferred Spar Flange Lines

The manual says to transfer to the aft skins the line that had been drawn on the forward spar flanges. I decided to do this a different way. The goal was to draw a line on the aft skins so that it would be directly above the line that was drawn 0.3" from the edge of the stabilator main spar (this was done in step # 3 on page 02B-1).

I used a strap duplicator as a tool to draw this line. On a spare scrap of aluminum sheet, I drew a line that was 0.3" from the edge of the sheet. I then placed the strap duplicator so that the pin on the bottom of the strap duplicator was touching the edge of the aluminum sheet. I then placed a piece of masking tape on the top of the strap duplicator so that it exactly aligned with the line on the scrap sheet (see Image 1). On the stabilator, I lifted the forward edge of the rear skin and slid the strap duplicator between the skin and the stabilator spar. I pulled the strap duplicator "forward" until the pin on the bottom of the strap duplicator made contact with the edge of the flange on the spar. I could then place a mark on the rear skin corresponding to the edge of the masking tape (see Image 2). A hole drilled through this mark would then be exactly 0.3" from the edge of the spar flange. I made several marks like this and then drew a line through the marks. This process was done four times: stabilator top left, stabilator top right, stabilator bottom left and stabilator bottom right.
