Brief Description:  Pitot and Static system check (PAP-G5)

I’ve been working to get ready to start the engine, so I’ve been going through the KAI and the PAP to make sure I’ve got everything hooked up. Some of the PAP instructions require the wings to be installed, so those will have to wait. For now I thought I would check out the Pitot and static systems per the Product Acceptance Procedures (PAP) – section G5. I bought some tubing from Lowes (5/16" ID) and a syringe at Tractor Supply. I then fired up the EFIS and hooked up the syringe. Initially, I could bring the speed up to 130 kts, but it would drop off immediately, so I thought I had a leak somewhere. I finally figured out that it was the 5/16” tube over the pitot tube. I tried a small hose clamp, but that didn’t work. I ended up using a couple of small zip ties pulled real tight. Once I had that figured out the speed held so well that I didn’t need to time the leakage…basically it was steady.
Next was the static system. I used some clay and the same syringe, but I had a little trouble getting to seal completely. Initially, once I got it adjusted to the desired altitude (1200 ft above my garage altitude of 620 ft), then it started dropping. Per the instruction I was to time the drop from 1000 ft above to 900 ft above, then 800, then 700 etc. Well from 1000 to 900 it took about 3.5 minutes, but after that it was greater than 10 minutes and basically stopped. So I think the leak is just in the clay/syringe and not the static system, so I count that as checks good.
I also got the oil system purged per Rotax instructions, coolant added and fuel running through the system. The fuel was a bit of an adventure, let me just say to make sure all access panels are off to the fuel connectors and make sure to check that all connections are connected and tightened down. Anyway, I’m basically ready to start the engine, but I want to run through the rest of the PAP before turning the key.
